Obituary of Frederick Marvin Kinney

On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, Frederick Marvin Kinney, loving husband and father of four children passed away at age 84. Fred was born in Minneapolis, MN on November 22, 1936 to Marvin Kinney and Helen Nelson (Kinney) Vinson. On August 14, 1960, he married Joyce Peggy Pleiss. They had four sons, Jeffery, John, Steven and Daniel. He graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis, MN in 1954 and soon after enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during the Cold War being assigned duty on the USS Coral Sea. Following his service in the Navy, he attended Mankato State College in Mankato, MN and graduated in May of 1959 with a BS in Industrial Education. In 1962-64 he taught Industrial Arts at Grand Meadow High School (MN) and coached the high school wrestling team. From 1964-1972 he taught Industrial Arts at Austin High School (MN); and after receiving his degree in Health Education, he taught Health Education there until his retirement in 1995. During those years he was an assistant wrestling coach at AHS; head wrestling coach at Austin Community College (MN) for several years; and taught driver education. He loved woodworking projects at home and enjoyed golfing, camping and traveling around the US with his family and friends. He was active with his church families at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin, MN and Hosanna Lutheran Church in Kearney, MO -- serving on property and maintenance committees. Fred also worked on several Habitat for Humanity projects in the Austin, MN area. Fred was preceded in death by his father, Marvin; his mother, Helen; his infant son, Jeffery; his son, Daniel; and his step-brother, Mike. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; 2 children, John and Steve; daughter in-laws Sarah, Anita, and Ann; his brother Brian; his step-mother Anna; step-sisters Mary, Kathy, and Karen; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. A burial service will be scheduled for later in the spring at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kearney, Missouri.
